About

I started out in the late 1970s as one of the first female Top 40 DJs in America at South Florida’s Y100. I was an unlikely candidate to be a DJ in any era. I wasn't just a square peg in school, I was an octagonal one. But I loved listening to the radio. It was my salvation. By becoming a DJ and using an alias ("The Madame"), I magically transformed into someone who could talk to anyone with confidence and ease -- as long as I had a microphone in my hand.

I eventually landed in New York City on the original WKTU, co-hosted the morning show with Jay Thomas, and did my own show following it. I survived the format change to Classic Rock (WXRK/K-Rock) and after a good deal of sturm und drang over what to call my new laid-back persona, management suggested “The Rock and Roll Madame.” Problem solved.

I ended my DJ career in 2003, once again in the world of pop music, at Z100, America’s most listened-to music radio station, and by creating an R&B radio station for VH1.com called Black Jack. Now I'm a writer and voice artist and divide my time between North Carolina and my nonagenarain aunt in New York.

I'm often asked if I still have my cat Lupe, featured in the book. Sadly, Lupe got out of the house on November 18, 2006 and was never seen again. Through my relentless, agonizing search for her I discovered Tucker at the Greensboro animal shelter.  The first thing he did was re-educate me on how to treat a male. Just feed him, stroke him, and tell him he's gorgeous. He'll worship you.
